Artist and author Rosa Fedele, daughter of Italian migrants to Australia, was forbidden to pursue an artistic career.
Finally able to follow her vocation in adulthood, she studied at the prestigious Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney. Unconstrained by conventional expectations, her work is genre-defying – slipping between portraiture and still life to vintage cars, often veering off into the world of whimsy.

https://thepopupproject.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/unnamed-20.pngJanine partnered up with Steve in the early seventies and they have been committed to making a life in the countryside (now known as The Southern Highlands) since 1976. They have built and fired many kilns over that time with their focus on wood firing.
Since their workshop rebuild from the 2019 fire, Janine continues to make wheel thrown domestic stoneware fired in a gas kiln. She enjoys all manner of decorating techniques using colours, slips and carving methods. She hopes to imbue soul and simplicity into the next chapter of her working life.
Steve has travelled, studied and exhibited in Japan, Korea, China and the UK. and has an M.A. Hons and PhD researching ceramic raw materials of the Southern Highlands. This academic research has deeply informed my creative practice.
He has spent the last 20 years studying ‘sericite’ native porcelain stones around the world, and the clay bodies and glazes that can be made from them.
Steve and Janine’s workshop has 17kW of solar PV, enough to power bisque and glaze firing kilns. However,Steve specialises in clean, short stoneware wood firing for my exhibition work. Environmental considerations are forefront in his creative thinking.

“Creativity has proven to be my greatest access to self-expression and to the magical joy of play. Making and creating is a process where I unplug from the head and turn up the joy amidst play.”
Sarah’s woven work and sculptural pieces are a dance through play and partnership with found and foraged pieces from nature. Her painting is a melody of exploring colour. Twenty plus years ago she began painting in only blues, then gingerly ventured to blue plus white; nowadays it’s the whole colour palette. In drawing and mixed media it’s about breathing in the details and honouring the ordinary newly. It’s all a discovery.

My family has a great affinity with the ocean and it is at the heart of my most cherished childhood memories. My grandmothers, both artists, in watercolours and oils, opened me up to the art world from a young age. I am human, so I have experienced trauma, both happened to and created by me. My work is based on the human experience but with the aesthetics that connect me to my childhood, nature and culture. Whilst the human experience in my art is based on my perspective and wide range of influences affecting my reality of existing (mental, emotional, cultural, spiritual and physical), I hope to relate to my audience.

Encouraged by his parents, he pursued art early, earning a commercial art diploma in high school and a scholarship to the South Australian School of Art at 17. Stan studied under notable artists and had works featured in the Peter Stuyvesant Exhibition. Despite being offered a scholarship to the New York School of Contemporary Art, he chose to attend teachers college while continuing his art studies.
After a car accident in 1969, Stan left teaching to pursue music in Sydney, where he also published a comic strip. He exhibited pop art in 1978 and enrolled at Flinders University to study various subjects. Balancing music and art, he joined the band Mickey Finn, designing their promotional materials. In 1993, he moved to Bowral, signing a songwriting deal and continuing his art, including a commissioned painting for Michael Gudinski.

https://thepopupproject.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/YVONNE-RUBIN.jpgOver the years, Carmen has held a variety of academic positions and have made significant contributions to the treatment of anxiety disorders. Carmen’s deep research into anxiety eventually led her to explore the therapeutic potential of humor as a coping strategy. This intersection of serious academic inquiry and practical therapeutic techniques has been a defining feature of their professional journey.
Amidst their rigorous academic and clinical pursuits, Carmen has nurtured a passion for art, taking occasional classes to balance the intensity of their primary work. Her artistic journey found a new rhythm during regular afternoon classes in Wagga, where they joined a small group of women under the guidance of a remarkable teacher. These classes became a creative oasis, offering a space to delve into various techniques, often by reproducing the works of established artists, which honed their skills and deepened their appreciation for different styles and methods. Carmen began to create original pieces, channeling their unique perspective and experiences into her art.

The perfect contrast of dark and light transforms a figure or scene, creating a mood not otherwise imagined. The use of oils built in layers is my preferred medium, my compositions mostly figurative with a narrative. I would describe my work as realism with a twist, often disrupting the image in some shape or form. I draw great inspiration from past masters such as Caravaggio, Velasquez, Vermeer and Manet, and am drawn to the visual effects of film noir.”
Wendi completed a BFA at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney in 2014. She has furthered her studies at the Julian Ashtons Art School in the Rocks, Sydney. She holds a Diploma of Visual Arts which has resulted in over 30 years experience as a Graphic Designer.

https://thepopupproject.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Wendi-Toohey.jpgWhat makes 44spoons’ work so unique is that each painting is created using spoons, rather than brushes. Acrylic paint is dripped and splattered across raw canvas, glass, or acrylic using a variety of metal spoons. The effect is playful, bold, and textural.
Over the past few years, my style has varied from large-scale abstract works to smaller 3D whimsical scenes and animals—wild, super, and mischievous. Currently, I’m exploring large-scale pieces. While my subject matter constantly evolves, my technique remains consistent and I’m having a ball.
In 2022, I graduated with my Masters of Art Therapy and am currently facilitating sessions with women at WAGEC in Redfern. I also conduct fascinating workshops with kids and teenagers.

Born in Colombia and raised in Australia, her practice focuses on expressive portrait and abstract painting, often enriched with vibrant colours and bold brush strokes.
She is compelled to portray the rich and intricate life stories she sees in the human face and using the spontaneous gestural paint on the canvas to creative vibrant expressive abstract work. Diaz graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the National Art School in Sydney (NAS) in 2022.
“I think when I draw or paint it helps me to process the world more. Things make more sense and are less chaotic – more beautiful”.
