My painting explores the material qualities of paint, seeking resonance in content and engaging with art’s long history. It navigates technique and the myriad impressions from my experience and inner dialogue, a multifaceted process that defines my artistic drive. This perspective stems from growing up between Sydney and Athens, including the liminal space a child exists in when flying alone long distance.
My formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University (1990) and a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Painting from Sydney College of the Arts (1994), where I studied under Lindy Lee. My second solo exhibition, ‘Night,’ at the James Harvey Gallery in Clovelly, showcased my early oil on board studies of urban landscapes – shipyards, streetlights, and liminal parks. My work often draws from the experience of solitary journeys across wet tarmac runways and empty skies, echoing a child’s view of city lights reflecting on rain-washed streets, observing passing vehicles from an isolated space.
My art often finds explanatory power in everyday objects and ‘codified cultural clutter,’ depicted in sometimes large-scale oil on board paintings of matched pairs. My work has been exhibited in over fifteen shows, including solo presentations like ‘One Year’ and ‘Night,’ and was selected for a private exhibition for the Rolling Stones. I’ve been recognized with awards, including being hung twice in the Portia Geach Memorial Award and receiving numerous drawing prizes from the Royal Art Society, and a Litlink residency at Varuna in 2018.
