Artists of the Round Yard Inc. | Their Story

Artists of the Round Yard Incorporated (ARY) is a collective of creative professionals who
call Retford Park, Bowral, their artistic home. Founded in 2018, ARY grew from a
gathering of artists at the invitation of Scott Pollock, then Property Manager of the
National Trust (NSW). His vision was simple but powerful: to establish a group that
would share inspiration, collaborate across disciplines, and create exceptional arts
projects within the inspiring grounds of Retford Park – the former residence of the late
James Oswald Fairfax AC, who was known as a philanthropist and great collector and
supporter of the arts.

From humble beginnings under open skies, ARY has embraced diversity and worked
towards a space where creativity could flourish. Over the years, ARY has become more
than an organization; inspired by the rhythms of rural life it is a living tapestry woven
from the stories, talents, and aspirations of our members.

Our members work across many mediums including sculpture (in metal and stone),
painting, drawing, textiles, printmaking, mixed media, ceramics, jewellery, and
puppetry. This blend of practices allows us to present exhibitions that are rich in variety
and full of unexpected connections.

Supporting the National Trust is central to our purpose. At Retford Park exhibitions, a
percentage of sales are donated to the Trust to assist with the ongoing care and
preservation of Retford Park – a place that inspires both our work and our visitors.

Under the leadership of our executive committee stewardship, the group has continued
to evolve. The challenges of Covid-19 brought fresh ways of connecting, from virtual
studio visits to online meetings, ensuring that creativity never stopped flowing. With the
support of current Retford Park Property Manager, Ann Frederick, and the National
Trust of NSW, ARY has continued to thrive, scheduling exhibitions and events at the
property several times each year.

Some of our original artists remain part of ARY’s journey, while others have moved on to
new projects. At the same time, new members have joined, bringing fresh perspectives
and creative energy. This evolving membership is part of what keeps ARY dynamic and
relevant. We warmly welcome applications from artists who are interested in joining
and contributing their own vision to our community.

Today, ARY is proud to share its work with the community through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative projects. Each artist contributes their unique voice, shaping a group identity that is as diverse as it is unified.

Here, at Retford Park, Artists of the Round Yard invite you to we celebrate not only the
art we create, but the connections we forge – with one another, with community, and
with the enduring beauty of our countryside home.
