After retirement from my physiotherapy career, my passion for stone carving was able to flourish. This voyage began seriously with a move ”to the country” at Bellawongarah, to a 5 acre bush block, and a perfectly suitable weatherboard cottage.
There was a paddock ready for the shed, to include a small gallery space, a tool and work area and a verandah.
I am also ongoingly appreciative of support over this period from colleagues May Barrie, June Bennett, Jan Shaw, and Jules Van de Sande who formed the Callemondah Sculptors group at May’s place, Callemondah. May’s son Barrie Voorwinden has also been ongoingly helpful.
A gigantic leap forward occurred at Bellawongarah with the arrival of huge boulders of marble, granite and other types of stone delivered onsite by trucks and cranes. I gradually collected a great variety of power tools , grinders etc, all big steps forward from my previous experience of hand carving sculpting.
It’s hard to describe the process of starting work on a brand new rock with all one’s doubts and worries about just how to proceed.
Gradually ideas coalesce and a profound peace settles with the project: one can gradually allow the work to flow.
