Loraine Coles: A Celebration of Art, Abstraction and Creative Passion

For local artist Loraine Coles, art is not just a form of expression—it’s a dynamic journey of movement, colour, and emotion. With her signature free-flowing marks, layered textures, and bold abstraction, Loraine creates pieces that invite the viewer into a world of fantasy and imagination. As a dedicated member of The Pop-Up Project, she continues to enrich the Southern Highlands’ creative community with her vibrant, evocative works.

Now, art lovers have a rare opportunity to own an original Loraine Coles piece at an unbeatable price. On April 26, from 2pm to 4pm, Loraine will be holding a special Blue Door Stocktake Sale – where everything must go! This one-day-only event offers collectors and newcomers alike the chance to take home her unique works, with nothing priced over $90. Whether you’re an avid admirer of abstract art or simply looking for a piece that speaks to your soul, this is an unmissable event.

A Life in Colour and Motion

Loraine’s passion for art is evident in every brushstroke. She is drawn to gestural abstraction, a technique that allows her to create movement and energy on canvas. Her work, often characterised by marks, dots, and lines, tells a story beyond the frame – one of emotion, spontaneity and artistic freedom.

This philosophy is at the heart of her creations. Whether working with acrylics, watercolours, ink, charcoal, or pastels, Loraine thrives in the realm of mixed media, letting her instincts guide each piece. The result? Artworks that feel alive, constantly shifting and revealing new dimensions with every glance.

From Sydney to the Southern Highlands

Loraine’s artistic journey began long before she made the Southern Highlands her home. A Diploma in Creative Visual Arts from the International School of Colour & Design, as well as a Certificate III in Applied Colour & Design, laid the foundation for her career. Over the years, she explored various mediums, from intricate collages to the free-flowing, semi-abstract style that defines her work today.

Her move from Sydney to the Highlands marked a turning point – both in her personal journey and in her creative evolution. She quickly became a fixture in the local arts scene, making an impact at the Blue Square Art Prize, where she successfully sold several of her works. Since then, her art has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including:

  • ARTS Trail, Wingecarribee Shire Council, Bowral (2019, 2020, 2021)
  • Blue Square Art Prize, Millis Gallery, Moss Vale (2019, 2020, 2021)
  • DaVinci’s Framing and Fine Art, Marrickville – Solo Exhibition (2017)
  • Young Blood Emerging Designers Exhibition, Paddington Town Hall (2015)
  • Waverley Library, Waverley Council, Bondi Junction – Solo Exhibition (2013)

Inspired by the Greats

Loraine’s work is deeply influenced by some of history’s most celebrated artists. John Olsen, Brett Whiteley and Vincent Van Gogh have each played a role in shaping her artistic voice. Like them, she finds inspiration in the Australian landscape and seascape, capturing its rhythm, energy and untamed beauty through expressive gestures and vivid hues.

Her pieces are not just paintings; they are experiences – windows into the way she sees and feels the world. This emotional connection is what makes her work so captivating, drawing in collectors and admirers from across the region.
